Tonight while watching t.v., a commercial for a diamond ring came on. You can imagine the commercial: A beautiful girl, a hunky guy, googly looks at one another and then…..out comes a box with a diamond ring. Aaaaah…LOVE. We’ve all seen commercials like this a thousand times before, but there was something about this one that struck me. When the box with the beautiful ring inside was opened, a tag line came up that said, “You Are Loved”. Those three words caught my attention.
Throughout the commercial, the narrator stressed the importance of the diamond ring. The entire focus of the ad was to sell the idea that if you receive a diamond ring for Christmas then “You Are Loved”. I found this very troubling. Now maybe I am just a scrooge because I don’t have a diamond ring on my finger and I don’t anticipate getting a diamond ring from anyone anytime soon, but I don’t think that was the problem.
The problem with the commercial was that it implied that a person, particularly a woman, needs a man in her life and a diamond ring on her finger to be loved. It implied that without a diamond ring, there is no love. Friends, there could be nothing further from the truth. Whether you have a diamond ring on your finger or not, YOU ARE LOVED. Everyone, male, female, married, unmarried, young, old, short, tall, thin, heavy, rich, poor, even the seemingly unlovable, whoever you are…YOU ARE LOVED.
We have been given a gift that is greater than any diamond and that is worth far more than gold. Over 2,000 years ago, God gave us the gift that genuinely says, “You Are Loved.” God gave us the gift of Jesus!
On that night in Bethlehem, God sent a baby. Born in a manger to regular parents, surrounded by animals and wrapped in swaddling clothes, was God’s love for the world, Jesus. Jesus came to walk among us, to literally be with us, to experience time on earth, the flesh of the body, hunger, pain, heartache, fear, anger, laughter, love, and joy. Jesus came so that we would have life and live it abundantly. Jesus came so that we would be forgiven of our sins and live with Him in eternity! Jesus came to bear our heartaches, to ease our pain, to draw us in with kindness and to love us with an everlasting love. My friends, You Are Loved!
John 3:16 states it clearly, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” You Are Loved!
Throughout this Christmas season as you think of the gifts you want, the gifts you are purchasing for others and the gifts you may or may not receive, I pray that you will remember this one thing: The gifts of this earth will eventually fade away but the gift of God’s love is everlasting. God’s love for us will never end. The only gift that will truly provide love and joy is Jesus.
So the next time you see a diamond ring commercial that says, “You Are Loved”, know in your heart that indeed you are! You are loved by the Creator of the universe, the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, the greatest Prince of all.. the Prince of Peace! Yes! You Are Loved!
Nuggets of Bold Faith
What makes you feel loved? A hug? A compliment? An expensive gift?
What things have you done in your life that make you feel unloveable?
How does it make you feel to know that you are deeply loved by the Creator of the universe? No matter where you have been, what you have done, or where you are now, God dearly loves you.
This Christmas, when buying gifts for others or receiving gifts yourself, stay focused on the greatest gift of all, Jesus!
Holy God, how blessed we are that you love us. God, we thank you for sending Your Son, our Savior, to walk among us and to be with us. You, God, in human form, in earthly time, in an earthly body, came to share in life alongside us. God, we thank you for the gift of Christ, who showed us Your love for prostitutes, tax collectors, and even a thief on the cross. God we know that even when we feel unlovable, You draw us near to You and hold us close. How great is Your love for us! Help us this season to know Your love and to share Your love with others. Help us to be Your light to the world and help us to not need material items and diamond rings to feel loved. We have already received the most precious gift of all, the gift of true love, the gift of Jesus Christ.
In Jesus Name, Amen.
